Orkney is celebrating Dementia Awareness Week from 4th – 9th June, and The Pickaquoy Centre are proud to be supporting this with two films showing in the Phoenix Cinema.
There will be two screenings of the 1978 film Grease, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this classic musical. Step back in time to Rydell High, where John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John play the mismatched love birds Danny and Sandy, and sing along with your favourite songs such as Greased Lightnin’, Hopelessly Devoted To You, and You’re The One That I Want!
We’ll be starting things off with a Dementia friendly screening on Tuesday afternoon at 2pm – for this show there will be no adverts or trailers, the lights will be left on low and there will be a relaxed atmosphere so that people can move around as they need to. Perfect for people with dementia, memory loss and their family, friends and carers but open to the public so that everyone can enjoy the film together.
On the Wednesday evening, we’ll be getting our 50s gear on and serving Grease inspired cocktails, Pink Lady cupcakes and popcorn – doors open at 6:30pm and the film starts at 7:30pm.
Also showing in the Phoenix this week, from Wednesday 6th – Friday 8th, is the film The Leisure Seeker, which stars Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland as a couple who head off on one last road trip before his Alzheimer’s and her cancer can catch up with them. On an unforgettable journey in the faithful old RV they call The Leisure Seeker, they travel from Boston to the Ernest Hemingway House in the Florida Keys.
