The Pickaquoy Centre will be attending Orkney’s first Deaf Awareness event on Monday 14th May, to promote the subtitled screenings we run in the Phoenix Cinema and hear about other ways we can help support people with a hearing loss in Orkney.
The event will run from 10am – 12.30pm in the MacGillivray Room at the Orkney Library and Archive. Other organisations attending include the Sensory Impairment Services, Disability Forum, Voluntary Action Orkney and Orkney Deaf Children’s Society, among others.
Organised by Sarah Eaton, who is deaf herself, there will also be a free Deaf Awareness session from 11am – 12pm, where participants can learn about hearing loss and the different communication tactics used.
The Phoenix Cinema has been showing subtitled films for the hard of hearing since March 2017, with over 50 subtitled screenings scheduled in that time.
To celebrate Deaf Awareness Week (14-20 May), it has organised two screenings of the Deaf Shorts Showcase next weekend. These short films include the Oscar® winning The Silent Child, and feature the representation of deafness not as the main form of conflict but as part of a wider narrative. The filmmakers come from both deaf and hearing backgrounds and together their work presents a unique representation of the deaf community in the 21st Century. On Saturday 18th May there is a 6pm screening suitable for ages 15 and over, Sunday’s 1:15pm show is rated PG and suitable for school-aged children and above.
Also showing in the Phoenix this month are the films A Quiet Place and Wonderstruck, which both feature deaf children in the story and star the deaf American actress Millicent Simmonds. Subtitles and sign language feature in the films as part of the narrative, and screenings with additional subtitles for the hard of hearing have been scheduled.
Other subtitled screenings scheduled for this month include the children’s film Duck Duck Goose, Wes Anderson’s animated comedy Isle Of Dogs and superhero blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War.
