Orkney Climbing Stars Reaching New Heights!
Eight young climbers from Orkney have qualified for the Scotland Youth Squad earlier this month.
Kirsty Copland, Katy Wallace, Arwen West, Kara Corsie, Sean Dunnett, Hope Henderson, Emma Rendall and Tia Whitton qualified at the recent North Youth Climbing Series competition in Kinlochleven at the beginning of March.
Other members of the Orkney Youth Squad that competed were Keira Lowe, Scott McCartney, Sophie McCartney, Kimberley Sinclair, Craig Burton and Freya Boonzaier.
Ian Rendall, climbing instructor at The Pickaquoy Centre and Orkney Climbing Club coach, said: “This is the highest number of Orkney climbers that has ever qualified for the Scotland Youth Squad, up from six qualifiers last year. All of these young people have worked extremely hard to get to this level of competition, and we are very proud.
“Many of the competitors these youngsters come up against have access to climbing walls that are much bigger, or have more public sessions available, so this makes the achievement even more outstanding.
“Some of these kids started off at Picky taster sessions or through the National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS), so it shows just how far they’ve come.”
The next competition, the Scottish Finals, takes place the weekend of the 23-24 March in Glasgow. Those that qualify in Glasgow will head down to Sheffield for the British finals at the end of April.
Everyone at The Pickaquoy Centre would like to wish the Scottish Youth Squad members the very best of luck over the coming months.
