A regular annual price increase is taking place across the Pickaquoy Centre from Monday, 5 June. As the price structure for the Phoenix Cinema is changing slightly differently to rest of the Centre, we want to outline these changes and what they mean for our customers.
The ticket price of all film screenings is increasing by 50p and event cinema screenings (National Theatre, Royal Opera House, etc.) by £1. However, 50p from every ticket sold will be going into a new Cinema Development Fund, which will be used to improve the cinema facilities once enough money has been raised. The first project earmarked for the fund is upgrading the cinema seats.
Another change is that all film screenings on Saturdays and Sundays will now be charged at standard rates, and off peak rates will only apply before 5pm Monday to Friday. There will however, be the introduction of a new Family Ticket at weekends, which can be used for either two adults and two children, or one adult and three children.
As well as this, Phoenix Kids screenings are a new addition to the schedule – these will be screenings of family-friendly films with all tickets priced at £2.50, for adults and children. These will enable everyone to enjoy the cinema experience at a very low cost, and are the perfect way to introduce young children to the cinema for the first time. Phoenix Kids screenings are likely to be popular films we have already shown, or other suitable films that are available.
The first film we are bringing back for our Phoenix Kids programme is the animated comedy The Boss Baby (cert. U), in which seven-year-old Tim gets a new brother who is no ordinary baby… Screenings are at 12:30pm on Sunday 25 June and 10:30am on Saturday 1 July.
Senior Cinema Projectionist Victoria Rhodes said: “While our ticket prices are going up we have tried to keep these as competitive as we can, while bringing the Phoenix into line with normal standard and off peak cinema pricing structures. We are still one of the cheapest cinemas in Scotland, and feel our prices are fair for the service we provide. And our new Family Ticket and Phoenix Kids screenings mean that for some film shows the cinema will actually be more affordable than it was before.
“The Cinema Development Fund is also a very exciting new project. One of the most common comments we get from customers is that our seats aren’t as comfortable as they could be, but unfortunately we don’t have the funds to replace these outright so had to think of ways to raise the money. As well as putting 50p from every ticket sold into this fund, we will be adding money raised from our regular poster sales and other fundraising activities – watch out for updates on this over the next few months.
“We hope our customers will support us as we continue to develop the Phoenix Cinema and make it as good as it can possibly be for the whole community.”
